Federal Judge Blocks WI Tribe from Hunting Deer at Night

    By Chad Love

Looks like Wisconsin's Chippewa tribe members will not be able to hunt for deer at night for the remainder of the tribal season. A federal judge blocked that plan earlier this week.

    From this story on twincities.com
U.S. District Judge Barbara Crabb wrote in her order that the tribes overstepped their authority when they granted tribal hunters permission to kill deer at night without the state's approval. The judge said the move violated a ruling she made more than 20 years ago that requires the Chippewa and the state to negotiate changes to tribal hunting rules and get her approval before making them final. She encouraged both sides to reach a deal. "The proper response cannot be for each side to decide on its own what the law permits, particularly with an issue that involves public safety concerns," Crabb wrote.

How do you feel about the judge's decision?

IL Man Fined for Illegally Collecting Whitetail Deer Semen

    By Chad Love

If you didn't think the craze for creating big bucks at any cost could get worse, or weirder, then read on.*

From this story on the Dallas Morning News
An Illinois geneticist must pay $30,000 and serve three years of probation for illegally obtaining valuable semen from whitetail deer in East Texas. A federal judge in Tyler sentenced 55-year-old Raymond Favero of Braidwood, Ill. Favero in July pleaded guilty to wrongful acquisition of wildlife in interstate commerce. Texas law bars importing live whitetail deer or mule deer amid concerns about transmittable diseases. Prosecutors on Wednesday said Favero must also pay a $6,000 fine and $24,000 to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Federation.

Missouri Alternative Deer Hunting Season Kicks Off

    By Chad Love

Missouri deer hunters, it's time to grab your air rifle, handgun or crossbow and head to the woods because the Show Me state's "alternative methods" deer season is now underway.

    From this story on ky3.com:
It's called Missouri's alternative methods deer hunting season. It runs from now through Christmas Day. More hunters are hitting the woods with a historical game plan. Hunters have used black-powder muzzleloader rifles for years, but the Department of Conservation says there was an increase in people interested in hunting with handguns and crossbows. They wanted to expand opportunities to use those tools without hurting the deer population. If hunters want to be a little more traditional, they can use longbows or even a tool called an atlatl which is like a spear. Officials say hunters like the historical aspect as well as the challenge.

USDA Trapper Under Fire for Photos of Trapped Coyotes

    By Chad Love

A government trapper in the USDA's wildlife services division is under fire after taking photographs that appear to show his dogs tormenting coyotes caught in leghold traps, and then posting the photographs on Facebook and Twitter. The photos, which inevitably went viral, have now sparked an investigation.

From this story in the Missoula Independent
In early November, Jamie Olson, a federal Wildlife Services employee in Wyoming, told the Indy he made a “big-ass mistake” in posting several photos of live coyotes caught in leg-hold traps on Facebook and Twitter. Those photos, some of which appeared to show Olson’s dogs tormenting the trapped coyotes, outraged animal-rights groups and triggered an investigation...

Alabama Woman Holds 12 IGFA World-Line-Class Records, Shooting for 100

    By Chad Love

An Alabama woman who holds twelve, yes, twelve, IGFA world line-class records thinks that isn't quite enough, so she's shooting for an even 100.

From this story on Alabama's localtv15.com:
If you ask people who live on the Gulf Coast to name their passions, you'll most likely hear fishing. But for Sjon Harless, fishing is a bit more than a hobby. After all, she's one of the world's best at reeling in the big catch. "They're 12 International Game Fish Association world records, which means that each one is a different line class," she said. Harless' dozen world records are proudly displayed on a wall in her home. "All of these have to be approved. I have to have witnesses, and like five pages of paperwork," Harless added. "They are mullet, snappers, barracudas, jacks, rooster fish."

Potential Female Record Buck Tagged in Oklahoma

    By Chad Love

A massive non-typical whitetail deer arrowed by an Oklahoma woman may be the largest buck ever taken by a female bowhunter in the Sooner State.

    From this story on newsok.com:
Linet Navarro of Chandler likes to bake cakes and kill deer. On Nov. 8, Navarro killed the biggest whitetail of her life and perhaps the largest ever by a woman with a bow in Oklahoma. Her non-typical buck has a net green score of 175 2/8. A check of the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation's Cy Curtis records — a listing of big deer killed by Oklahoma hunters — show that larger non-typical bucks have been killed by female hunters with a gun, although it appears none have with a bow. The Wildlife Department does not distinguish between male and female hunters in the Cy Curtis record book. “Maybe they should,” Navarro said. “They could start it this year.”

Federal Judge to Hear WI Native American Tribe's Request to Hunt Deer at Night

    By Chad Love

Spotlighting for deer may soon become legal for members of a Wisconsin Native American tribe if a federal judge rules in their favor.

    From this story on jsonline.com
A federal judge is scheduled to hear arguments over whether the Wisconsin Chippewa can hunt deer at night. U.S. District Judge Barbara Crabb two weeks ago declared the state's ban on night deer hunting extends to tribal hunters, scuttling the Chippewa's request until Wednesday's hearing.
